Paka bounces back from jaundiceJaundice, Liver Problems
When Paka, a 6 ½ year old Tabby, started turning down tuna fish, treats, and his nightly “kitty massages” Todd, his human, suspected that he wasn’t feeling well. Paka’s playful personality had disappeared, his eating and litter box habits were off routine, and he was sleeping quite a bit more than usual. Worried that these changes in habits were a sign of ill health, Todd decided to take Paka to the veterinarian. Upon examination, Paka was diagnosed with jaundice, a yellowish pigmentation of the skin, tissues, and certain body fluids caused by liver damage. Given the state of Paka’s health, Todd’s veterinarian did not think that he would live for very much longer. Upset by this diagnosis, but determined to try and help Paka as much as he could, Todd began to research any holistic methods that might be beneficial. Reading that Milk Thistle, Chinese Buplereum, and a long list of other herbs were known to aid the cleansing of the liver, he ventured out to find a tincture, enzymes, and supplements that might work for Paka. Alternating giving Paka an anti-oxidant named Denosyl he had received from his vet, with an herbal tincture with supplements twice a day, Todd was able to help Paka beat the time frame that the veterinarian had given. After two weeks, Paka’s appetite was returning to him. Determined to keep Paka on a healthy track with a nutritious diet, Todd worked with the staff at the University Place Mud Bay to discuss all of the options he had and to decide what might work best for Paka. Todd started to feed him a Raw Advantage frozen raw diet with his liver cleanse supplements daily, along with a variety of canned foods (his favorite is Avoderm’s Tuna, Crab, and Sardine formula) and Pinnacle dry food. It has been four months since Paka was diagnosed with liver problems and given days to live. Todd and his veterinarian are both pleasantly surprised by the results of what love and devotion to friendship (not to mention Chinese Buplereum, Anti-oxidants, and nutritious foods) have done for him. Today, Paka is as lively as ever, playing fetch and is back to following “his buddy” Todd around the house.
